On December 7, the presentation of the report "Azerbaijan: Towards Green Development" prepared by the World Bank was held in Baku. Employees of relevant state institutions, civil society, educational centers, representatives of the World Bank and the UN in our country participated in the presentation ceremony.
Mrs. Sarah Michael, the country manager of the World Bank for Azerbaijan, noted that the transition to a low-emission economic model opens up opportunities for Azerbaijan to be competitive on a global and regional scale, and to take advantage of this, she emphasized the importance of expanding the application of innovations in the economy of Azerbaijan and the development of natural and human capital.
Deputy Minister of Economy Samad Bashirli emphasized that our country cooperates effectively with international financial organizations, including the World Bank, and that the reports prepared on the transition to the green economy will be an important source for the preparation of strategic documents in this direction in our country, "Azerbaijan 2030: National Priorities for socio-economic development". He noted that it will contribute to the realization of the goal of the 5th direction of "clean environment and green growth country". Noting that the implementation of obligations under the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN is one of the important components of the state policy in our country, the deputy minister emphasized the integration of economic, social and ecological factors in the implementation of the SDGs in our country, and the promotion of the "green economy". pointed out its importance. It was reported that as a result of the measures implemented in the environmental field and the projects implemented to support the "green economy", Azerbaijan ranked 10th in the Green Growth Index in the Asian region.
The deputy minister said that the main task ahead is the restoration, reconstruction and reintegration of the territories freed from occupation into the country's economy, in accordance with the modern infrastructure, the implementation of the "smart city and smart village" concepts, as well as the "green energy zone" projects, in the direction of the restoration and health of the ecological environment. He pointed out that the work is ongoing.
Rauf Hajiyev, deputy minister of ecology and natural resources, Kanako Mabuchi, deputy UN resident coordinator, Sasha Eichberger, senior expert on environment, natural resources and blue economy of the World Bank, spoke about the greening of a number of existing sectors and the development of new green areas and the strengthening of climate-related measures. they noted its importance in terms of diversifying the country's economy and solving environmental problems.
Within the framework of the event, the panel moderated by Sebastian Molineus, regional director of the World Bank for the South Caucasus, discussed the assessment of potential opportunities for the transition to green transformation in Azerbaijan, the goals ahead for determining the sources of green development in our country in the medium and long term, and the work to be done.
